Talent Selection Process
What Type of Comedy Performer are you looking for?
Choosing the type of performer that would best suit your needs, may appear to be somewhat of a difficult decision...We can help...
There are several categories of comedy entertainers to choose from, such as...
Stand-up Comedians
Comedy /Magicians
Jugglers
Ventriloquists
Comedy/Musicians
Dueling Pianos Shows
It is important to assess your personal needs, as well as the preferences of the anticipated audience. All comedy performers are very funny entertainers within their specific form of comedy. Different types of performers appeal to different groups of people based on age, profession, etc.
Be sure that you understand the desires of your anticipated audience and survey them prior to making a final entertainment selection. It is nearly impossible to please everyone, all of the time. You need to select your performer based on the the majority of your potential audience.
For example...you probably wouldn't want to hire a "Redneck" comedian to perform for Certified Public Accountant convention in Boston.
Will you have the Technical Production Capabilities for the type of performer that you select?
Key items to be considered are as follows...
Overall performance venue
Lighting/Sound
Space
Physical stage size
Consider all of these factors during the selection process of the entertainer. Different performers sometimes have unique requirements that are critical to the success of their overall performance. Definitely inquire before you make a final selection
"G"
"PG-13"
"PG-17"
When in doubt about what the show rating should be...go with "G". The other options shown above should be evaluated for their compatibility with your majority of audience members. Your audience should always be made aware of the rating, potential language and material content of the show, to avoid offending someone.
Always be specific when informing the performer what the language and subject material limitations will be, for the actual show.
Determining the Length of the Performance...
When there is nothing else preceding the comedy performance, a typical comedy show should be approximately one hour and fifteen minutes to an hour and a half in length. When combined with other activities, the comedy performance should normally take place up front, prior to anything that could cause the audience to be distracted or tired out.
Just as an added note...many performers will often serve as MC's for your overall event if asked to do so...so don't be afraid to ask.
Audience Participation with the Comedians...
It is very important to determine if the performer that you selectdoes comedy material that requires audience interaction and/or physical participation. Some comedians will talk to the audience members, others will involve them in the show and a few will actually bring audience members on stage, to participate in a specific aspect of the comedy routine. Some audience groups enjoy being involved in the comedy show, while others will not.
Tailoring Material for a Specific Show
There are comedians that specialize in tailoring their comedy material for a specific audience to directly relate to that group. They are capable of "Roasting" (i.e. "picking on") individuals within that company or social group, etc, at the request of the show organizer (client). This type of show needs to be coordinated, in advance of the actual performance, in order to obtain the information necessary to make it successful. These shows can add another dimension to a regular comedy show and enhance the level of overall enjoyment, for a specific group of people.
